Alcohol ban to teens?
like, duh.
All this hoo-hah on the issue of underage drinking, leading to statements by concerned politicians, social experts and members of the public trying to ban alcohol consumption by the below 18 population, lamenting the decay of values, bla bla bla bla...
Just like the so-called "expose" story on the problem - it was just skimming the surface, not really dealing with the issue, and leaving most of us just going... okay, now tell us something we DON'T know for a change...
Look. Looking for reasons WHY teens drink alcohol is really a no-brainer. Shit, I can come up with the same list off the top of my head. And then again, what about the reasons why adults drink? Would it be different? More importantly, would it MAKE a difference anyway?
The "shocking" (which planet did these people come from anyway?) story that sparked this little debacle was about teens drinking at the clubs/pubs/bars.
Why go the typical (easy-way-out) route of the authorities and blame the youth for the shortcomings of law enforcing?
If a 15 year-old can buy beers at the local sundry shop - they wring their hands, call his parents incompetent, blame the Western world (oh how they just LOVE doing that!), lament the downfall of society in elaborate public statements for that illusion of concern. Nowhere in their narrow sphere of consciousness will they question the dimwit store employee who allowed the sale in the first place.
Clubs are constantly raided to unearth drugs and underaged patrons. (Drugs are another story altogether so I'll leave that aside.) More hand wringing, more crocodile tears, more lamentations on the breakdown of our values (as if we're the only country that has good values, lah), more crackdowns on activities of young people, more excuse to ignore the youth.
Well what about getting the clubs to actually DO their jobs in the first place? Putting up a sign ain't gonna do shit except ease their conscience. But here's a radical suggestion... a long shot... WHAT IF THE BOUNCERS ACTUALLY DID THEIR JOBS AND CHECKED ICs?
Oh, wait. Then what would the dirty old men have as motivation to spend money at the clubs, right?
