How come we're banning Lelaki Komunis Terakhir...
... when you're turning everyone into drones in this country?
My sister - yes, the long suffering lover of medicine, giving aid and forensics who can get a place in just about any university in every course EXCEPT the one she really wants to spend the rest of her life in - has been spooked - again.
Maybe local unis are, as one official (maybe born in the same family as Akmal Abdullah or Raja Azmi or the rest of the "only one race deserves to be here" club) put it :
"People like you don't belong in local unis."
Is it because she's not wearing a headscarf? Is it because she comes from (sub)urban upbringing? Is it because she speaks fluent English? Is it because she's got a ton of non-Malay friends and doesn't listen to Mawi?
I've had friends who had to put every ounce of pride behind just to get the education they need because they couldn't afford to study somewhere else (a.k.a universities that focus on EDUCATION, not on how their students look or dress).
They've all come from suburban/urban backgrounds. Bilingual, and from mid-to-high income families. All eager to learn. All bright sparks.
Until the other students start giving them shit. Ostracizing them for being different. Backtalking and bitching -- just making life difficult. WTF man. These friends of mine never did anything to them. Why the attitude problem? What's THEIR problem?
Anyways back to my sister. Her friends recently started university. And they are nice, decent girls from respectable suburban backgrounds. Good students, good behavior. And what do they get for the crime of not wearing a tudung?
PUBLIC HUMILIATION. They were rebuked in front of the entire student congregation, with authorities of the university telling them to do it regardless. "You must start being GOOD people now" they said.
REALLY? Good people? I guess putting on a tudung automatically makes you a martyr. Better start paving your road to heaven while you're at it.
Sure, it's a religious matter. It's a requirement to cover up because the men in our religion have no self control over their loins and we need to practise modesty so we can save the MEN from having sinful thoughts. (Yes, sounds really unreasonable but ask any ustadlah. They'll say the same thing)
But what's worse - a girl who's good in actions and thoughts, who prays and is good to her friends and family, but doesn't wear a headcover - yet doesn't dress like some Pantai Club ho either...
OR...
Some tudung-clad chick who looks all decent but sheds her hijab on weekends for mini skirts and tube-tops for wild boozing parties (don't deny it, we know these girls exist), or those fully-covered girls who get frisky/give blowjobs/get boned by their boyfriends... (we've only seen videos that portray a FRACTION of what really goes on out there)
I'd rather have my sister NOT live a life of hypocracy. I think our country has enough of that.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it supposed to be done out of your own will, your own intent, your own committment, your own readiness?
Or are we just happy to just cover up our girls and women, and like many issues in our country -pretend that it miraculously makes every single "evil" go away?
- this also goes for those so-called good guys who go for Friday prayers and then hit the clubs on the weekend for some drinking, partying and (if they're "lucky") sex. Hypocrites cleaning the weekly sin slate, ey?
